Low Stress Stockmanship Clinic with Curt Pate

Join the Ranchers Stewardship Alliance for a live, hands-on cattle handling clinic with renowned Montana stockman Curt Pate.

Nationally-recognized stockmanship instructor Curt Pate teaches techniques to put the proper pressure on cattle at a different angle and at varying amounts that helps move them comfortably and without bad experience. Curt grew up around Helena learning from cattlemen, cowboys, rodeo stock contractors, sheep herders, dairy farmers, and auction market operators. After a lifetime spent on livestock operations, he now travels the country leading live demonstrations and clinics, passing along the practical, low-stress handling methods he picked up from the great stockmen who came before him.

‘Sometimes you cannot see pressure or understand its effects until it has created a problem. When you force cattle to go into a pen, they may get excited, go on the fight, and become dangerous or very difficult to work. Negative pressure creates stress, positive pressure creates contentment,’ Pate says.

During this clinic, Curt will work cattle in real time and walk participants through the fundamentals of low-stress stockmanship, including:

  • Gathering, sorting, processing, and loading
  • Moving cattle effectively on foot or horseback
  • Reading animal behavior and using pressure and release to your advantage

Low-stress handling isn't just easier on the animals. It saves time, reduces injuries to people and livestock, and can improve weight gain and herd health. Whether you run a large operation or a handful of head, you'll leave with practical tips you can put to work on your own place right away.

Cost: $40 per person, burger lunch included, beef featured by Math Farms Beef
